A Note from Tanner Wray, Director of College Libraries and Information Services
The Libraries have an excellent opportunity for some refurbishment/renovations over the winter break, and later in the academic year. All four of the College Libraries will be fully painted. Rockville will receive three floors of carpet, and the Takoma Park Silver Spring (TPSS) Resource Center Library will receive one floor of carpeting (upper floor). With this work, we will be moving toward a consistent One College look and feel for the Libraries.
The first phase of work will be over the winter break and winter session. The Rockville Library and TPSS Resource Center Library will be painted, and the carpet will be installed. The facilities work will disrupt how we can provide services in Rockville and Takoma Park. The Libraries are actively planning to see which services will be available. Most of the work will occur after finals in December, and should be completed before the spring semester. We anticipate the following closures:
- Rockville Library will be closed Friday December 13th through January 1. The third floor in Rockville will be closed until January 7th.
- The TPSS Resource Center Library upper floor will be closed December 16th through January 27th. Access to the lower floor via the Writing Center will remain in place, and library services will be moved down to the lower floor.
Alternatives for library services and study spaces:
We understand that the Rockville Library closure impacts the last 2 days of finals in December. Our Rockville-based students can utilize study spaces and computers at the other campus libraries, in non-library study spaces across the Rockville campus, at the local public libraries, and also nearby higher education institutions.
- The Germantown and Cafritz libraries will be open during the winter refurbishment, and TPSS will be partially open. Only Rockville will be fully closed through January 1, 2014.
The Cafritz Art Library will be painted during 2014 (dates to be determined), and the Germantown Library will be repainted in the summer of 2014. New technology for group study rooms and collaboration areas will be installed in the Libraries sometime after the winter refurbishment at Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring.
We thank the Office of Facilities and Office of Information Technology for these investments they are making in the Libraries to support student success. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause and we thank the Montgomery College community in advance for your patience.
