of Takoma Park/Silver Spring Libraries
The MC Libraries’ first ethnographic, participatory design study focused on the Rockville Library and its users and potential users. Even as the Libraries work through the Rockville report, we are readying for a fall roll-out of the study of the TP/SS Library in the Resource Center and the Cafritz Art Center Library. We will assure that we engage library users and potential library users on both the east and west sides of campus and in a variety of program majors, with art and nursing among the main ones.
Ethnography -- a collection of qualitative methods that focus on the close observation of social practices and interactions -- is very fruitful approach to applied research for academic libraries. It provides data about what library users actually do in libraries and directly what they say their library needs and preferences are.
The Germantown Library will be the third campus studied, in 2015-16. These studies will be important elements toward creating Libraries of the 21st century for Montgomery College.
