Quick and Easy Scanning - Now Available in the Libraries!

The Montgomery College Libraries, partnering with the Office of Information Technology, are pleased to announce that all four Libraries now have high resolution, state of the art, and multilingual overhead scanners. The scanners were designed for high-volume scanning in library environments, and feature a book cradle which helps preserve the spine of books.

Dedicated to student success and college affordability, the new scanners:
·        will significantly cut down the time it takes to scan material through ease of use and fast scanning capabilities;
·        provide multiple digital file sending and sharing options to facilitate review and use of the scanned materials, including saving materials to USB drives, uploading them directly to the WEPA website, and sending them to email;
·        save paper and offer ‘green’ methods for using and manipulating academic literature in support of coursework; and
·        produce crisp, high quality scanned files that can be manipulated to accommodate reading on any type of electronic device students may be using in their research and coursework.

Additionally, Libraries print collections will become increasingly accessible and promote equity by facilitating access to library content within students’ personal digital file management systems as opposed to students vying for competition for print resources, such as textbooks, when checked out to an individual.

The Libraries and Office of Information Technology have invested in several technology resources to assist students in their academic success. These resources include laptop loaning, tablet loaning, One Button Studio video recording, and collaborative workstations. The overhead scanners are the newest addition to Montgomery College Libraries’ technology resources. We are dedicated to meeting student needs and helping them succeed.

Rockville Campus Library Increases Power Outlets

The Rockville Campus Library has increased the number of power outlets on the 2nd and 3rd floor with more than 125 outlets!  Many of the new outlets include USB power, so that students can plug in thirsty devices and laptops.
This project is the result of the recommendations that students made in the 2013 Rockville Library Ethnography study and the 2014 LibQUAL+ survey.  We asked how we could improve the library, and one of the most common suggestions was to increase access to power outlets. So we made it a top priority!
Rockville Campus Library now has 317 receptacles (many with USB power plugs).  This is a 65% increase in outlet availability to users.  We are confident that we have effectively responded to the student-expressed needs for convenience power.

If you ever have suggestions for improvements for the libraries, please let us know. MC Libraries listen and we are always looking for ways to better support you!

The Libraries' Newest Online Resources

Dear Faculty and Students,

Now that we are half way through the semester, your mind might be turning to research.  So far, your work has probably already begun to produce excellent assignments for your classes.  But, don't forget to include the Libraries' resources in your planning!

Over the winter break, the Libraries dramatically increased access to online journals, both in adding new subscriptions AND by boosting historical access to journals.  Why have we done this?  The Libraries recognized a major difficulty students and faculty had in accessing the world-class information available in our print journals - they were stuck at each campus library!  Now, students can access many of our journals online, at any time of the day, and from anywhere in the world.

Want to find out more? Here's how:
  • You can find out what access we have to specific journals on the Libraries' website, under the 'Articles & Databases' tab.
  • Check out RaptorSearch, a new way to across the catalog and our e-resources.
  • And of course, stop into any of the Libraries for an in person introduction to any of the Libraries' resources and services!
Good luck and happy researching!
