As part of the Middle States Report, Academic Assembly was charged with overseeing suggestions for Standard 6 on academic integrity. The AIRS (Academic Integrity in Research and Scholarship) Committee was formed to look at issues related to academic integrity including plagiarism and copyright.

As part of this charge, AIRS determined that faculty would benefit from some guidance on copyright. We have created a library guide that covers the basics of copyright, classroom use, fair use, various tools for determining use, etc. We hope that you will find this information useful.

Do you struggle with finding good sources and putting them into your research papers? If so, fear not! You can come to the TP/SS Writing, Reading, & Language Center in November to get individual help with both skills at one time.

Research Tuesdays are a series of workshops and open labs where you can learn about writing and research skills, and get help with both. They will be from 12:30-2:00 in RC 106:

October is National Information Literacy Awareness Month. In 2009, President Obama issued a presidential proclamation acknowledging the critical importance of information literacy to the social and economic welfare of the American people.

Knowing how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively from a variety of media and information resources is one of the five General Education competencies at Montgomery College.

What can information literacy do for our students now and for their continued lives in school and after? It can:
• enhance academic performance in schools, colleges, and universities
• improve productivity by working smarter for America in the global economy;
• foster a greater awareness of personal responsibility in alleviating healthcare costs;
• reduce considerably the growing achievement gap;
• support families in coping better with seemingly endless social and economic challenges;
• encourage wiser decision making within public and private sectors; and
• strengthen our national security efforts

It's Banned Books Week. Have you read or are you reading a banned book now? You may be and not even know it. For instance, are you participating in the One Maryland One Book project and reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie? If you are, you are reading a banned book. Banned books are books that others have challenged or tried to censor because of their content. Since 1982, more than 11,000 books have been challenged. Celebrate your freedom to read by reading a banned book!

The Libraries acquire Anatomy.TV

As part of a grant from Holy Cross Hospital, the libraries were able to acquire Anatomy.TV.

ANATOMY.TV is a suite of 3D interactive models of human anatomy. Intuitive controls allow the user to zoom, rotate and peel away layers to educate and communicate with an ease and directness that was never possible with print. A wealth of supporting media, MRIs, X-rays, live-action movies and animations are also included to supplement Anatomy.tv's high resolution, computer-generated models.

Pat Mehok Retires

After 40 years at Montgomery College, our director, Pat Mehok, has retired. We wish her a happy retirement.

During the immediate interim period, Diane Cockrell and Vani Murthy will serve as co-directors. Diane is responsible for assuring the effective and efficient operations of our campus libraries and overall public services. Vani is responsible for managing the centralized functions of the libraries, including technical services.

America's Black Warriors

From Films on Demand comes a new streaming video on America's Black Warriors, a history of African American soldiers.

"From the Revolutionary War to the Spanish-American War, black soldiers had fought under the Stars and Stripes. During the early decades of the 20th century, however, racism in the military saw them relegated to noncombat roles as their commanders grew to believe that black soldiers were unfit to fight. It was not until the demands of World War II necessitated the deployment of black soldiers on the battlefield that the ignorance and shortsightedness of those who had conspired to keep them out of the firing line became apparent. In this A&E Special, black World War II veterans speak with brutal honesty about the prejudice they encountered and the battles they fought. The program also illustrates how the advances made in the Second World War paved the way for the armed forces to become a model of successful integration for the rest of America."

If you want a list of titles on subjects like Political Fiction, In the Time of King Arthur, Paranormal Romance, Alternate History and, my personal favorite, Steampunk (whatever that is!), visit their Web site for ideas. Happy Reading...

P.S. from the Web site, Steampunk is defined as "a subgenre of science fiction or fantasy, refers to speculative stories set in the Victorian age of steam but with some technological or magical twist. Although the name is a play on cyberpunk (the dystopian science fiction of the 1980s that emphasized stories about computer technology), steampunk is more closely related to the genre of alternate history. Several steampunk novels appeared in the 1980s, and the genre is experiencing a new popularity now in the 21st century. 50th Anniversary of the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird

From a Library Journal review..."Harper Lee's coming-of-age classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, tells the story of six-year-old Scout Finch, her older brother Jem, and their father, Atticus, a small-town Alabama lawyer assigned to defend Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of rape. The reaction of the town, the dignity of Robinson, and the character of their father affect both children as they navigate the path from childhood innocence to adult understanding".

The Libraries have several editions of the novel as well as the award winning, 1962 film starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.

This juvenile bald eagle spent hours outside of the Rockville library 3rd floor windows last Thursday trying to catch squirrels. The squirrels were victorious this day. Unfortunately, he, or she, hid behind the leaves before we could find a camera.

Two group study rooms now available at the Germantown Campus Library

The Germantown Library is pleased to announce that we now have two Group Study rooms. The Group Study rooms are located on the first floor next to the photocopiers. The rooms are available to students on a first come, first serve basis. Walk-up reservations are accepted at the Circulation Desk but reservations can also be made up to a week in advance. No phone reservations are accepted at this time.

A current MC student ID is required to reserve the room along with a minimum of three people in the group. Reservations are made for a maximum of two hours, with an option to extend in increments of one hour if no other reservations are made. Along with the usual table and chairs, the Group Study rooms are equipped with outlets for laptops and a whiteboard. Markers for the whiteboard can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. You'll notice that these dispensers are available in various locations at the College.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Stay home if you are sick until at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of a fever-reducing medicine, such as Tylenol®).

Montgomery County’s flu hotline, 240-777-4200, is open Monday through Friday from 9a.m. to 5p.m.

Set in the swamps of Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the 1850s, “Song Yet Sung” weaves the voices of escaped slaves, free blacks and slave catchers. The narrative provides a compelling venue to discuss issues such as race, power, identity and Maryland history.

In her previous role, she was the Associate Director of Information Services at the Harvard Business School's Baker Library for two years where she managed the day-to-day operations of the library reading room and access and Reference services. She represented Baker Library under the Knowledge and Library Services division of the Harvard Business school. Previously, Del was a part of the Metadata and Taxonomy Team at the IMF/World Bank Joint Library in Washington, DC. She earned her Master's Degree in Library Science from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and is a native Texan. Del is very pleased to have joined Montgomery College to serve our diverse community of patrons, as well as, provide leadership to a committed library staff. The Montgomery College Library can help with Columbia Granger's Poetry Database. Produced by Columbia University Press, this database contains works of poetry found in anthologies and volumes of collected works and selected works for individual poets. This database currently has nearly 70,000 poems in full text and more than 500,000 poem citations. Are you looking for high-tech information? Check out the Computer Database, a fully searchable collection of over three million articles drawn from more than one thousand different periodicals. From the most seasoned techie to the general researcher, the Computer Database has loads of content to offer. Indexing for some periodicals goes back as early as 1980, and the database is updated daily. Full-text for more than 50 titles goes back to the 1980s, with a total of 435 titles available as full-text in the database—75 of which are peer-reviewed journals.
